Tonight the contrast of the still small voice of God … and the thundering, creative force of his Word … rings in my heart and mind …
God thunders across the waters … Brilliant, his voice and his face, streaming brightness … God‘s thunder tympanic … God‘s thunder symphonic … God‘s thunder smashes cedars … God‘s thunder spits fire … God‘s thunder sets the oak trees dancing …
~Peterson’s paraphrase of Psalm 29
IT is a beauteous evening, calm and free,
The holy time is quiet as a Nun
Breathless with adoration; the broad sun
Is sinking down in its tranquillity;
The gentleness of heaven broods o’er the Sea:
Listen! the mighty Being is awake,
And doth with his eternal motion make
A sound like thunder–everlastingly.
~Wordsworth
Out of eternal silence God spoke the Word, and through the Word created and recreated the world. In the beginning God spoke the land, the sea … the plants, birds … man and woman. Then, in the fullness of time, God’s Word, through whom all had been created, became flesh and gave power to all who believe to become the children of God … A word with power is a word that comes out of silence. A word that bears fruit is a word that emrges from the silence and returns to it. ~Nouwen
Morning and evening calm: the Lord has spoke
from no devouring whilrwind, but the still
green garden of a world-sustaining Will.
O tenderly by Him the heart is broken …
~J. K. Baxter
My my heart be broken … and the tree of life within me set to dancing … may I hear with my heart, mind, and soul the quiet voice, the thundering Word … and may I be renewed by his creative power …
