Connecting life, scripture, and poetry

sacredness in tears

Beth Ferguson, June 15, 2009

I cry easily.  I don’t know why.
I sometimes wish my eyes would just be dry!

I saw this quote online … “Emotions are to the heart what tears are to the eye, a window to the essence of our soul, the fabric of our consciousness. Tears of joy, tears of pain, tears of frustration and despair, tears of love and exaltation, one by one, they weave the mosaic of our life. When we learn to cherish each and every one of them, honor their truth and hold them in the center of our heart with undivided attention, we allow them to unfold and deliver the quiet magic of the insights they carry.” ~ Genviev Martin-Bernard

And then this one … “There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love.” ~ Washington Irving

My prayer … if not for dry eyes, then for tears that are sacred – a wellspring overflowing with love, joy, peace, passion …
