I heard Steve Wariner sing “Silent Strings” tonight.
The last string plucked; the last note played; the last breath … silent and still.
A mom, a dad, a daughter died in the past few days. They did not make the headlines except in the hearts of their loved ones.
The symphonic melody of their lives – silent, still – except as we see the veil between earth and heaven parted. There, their song has a new melody – the melody of love divine, love eternal.
Our loss is great – the pain stings – our hearts ache. And yet we know we can trust the heart and hand of our God.
Our minds are limited by the gravitational pull of this earth. God’s thoughts are higher …
As Isaiah writes, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
In the finite recesses of our minds we cannot fathom his purposes … but in his infinite wisdom, He makes this wild promise to each of us … to work all things together for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
And in the meanwhile … the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.
I lift up my friends tonight … those who are hurting, whose pain and loss are great … I find comfort in knowing that the Spirit is interceding on their behalf … knowing their weaknesses, knowing the deep needs that words cannot express. Great is His faithfulness!
