Connecting life, scripture, and poetry

they keep fallin’

Beth Ferguson, May 6, 2009

It’s raining again today … can you hear this lilting tune …

Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin’ seems to fit
Those raindrops are fallin’ on my head, they keep fallin’
…
But there’s one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me won’t defeat me
It won’t be long till happiness steps up to greet me
….
It won’t be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turnin’ red
Cryin’s not for me
‘Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complainin’
Because I’m free
Nothin’s worryin’ me
~Hal David & Burt Bacharach

The words to this pop tune remind us of a couple of things …

One … we have no control over the weather so we shouldn’t let it get to us.

Two … [God] causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Three … worry is useless …”Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. … Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? … Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

So today … I reject the blues that comes from days without sun … and rejoice in the sunlight of the truth!
