Connecting life, scripture, and poetry

obligation to love

Beth Ferguson, June 22, 2009

Do you hear the spirit’s whisperings as the minister preaches?  Does a particular line jump out at you as he reads the scripture?

For me this week, it was this verse:  “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.” As the word “debt” sunk in, I was reminded that the word implies liability, obligation, responsibility, requirement, accountability.  The word feels “lawful.”

These thoughts came to mind … as I read Romans 13:10, John 13:34 – 35; and 1 John.

Today’s sermon, the spirit’s caution
Obligation to love

Obeying the command
Fulfilling the law
Demonstrating whose we are

Offering a cup of water
A shelter in time of need
A friendly hello

Loving unconditionally, sacrificially
Obligation, yes, but even more so
The only response to love received
His gift, his mercy, his love expressed
In death, resurrection, and living power!
