Connecting life, scripture, and poetry

his eye – watching

Beth Ferguson, June 17, 2009

In the evening I’ve been watching the robins as they search for worms to feed their young.  They are at work almost constantly.  But even more fascinating is to watch the robins chase the squirrels from tree to tree … protecting their young from the enemy.

Vigilant robins
Chasing squirrels through the trees
Sentient, ready
Guarding lest the prey approach
Tending, protecting the young

Jesus prayed, “Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name.”  He knew that we, too, would need protection.  I’m reminded of the angel armies pictured in the scripture, the protection God provided to his people, the prayers of the psalmist when he cried out, “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”

There is an old hymn … one from my youth … one  stanza goes like this …

Let not your heart be troubled,
His tender word I hear,
and resting on His goodness,
I lose my doubts and fears;
though by the path He leadeth,
but one step I may see;

His eye is on the sparrow,
and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
and I know He watches me.

Tonight the robins picture the vigilance of the almighty God … he watches over me.
