Connecting life, scripture, and poetry

Hoping, Thinking, Reflecting October Edition

Beth Ferguson, October 3, 2026October 3, 2026

Looking out my window

In late September, flowers are blooming.

I am thinking

Our community group is exploring spiritual formation, spiritual practices. I’m thinking about the practices I have in place that allow God to mold and shape me.

I am thankful

I am so thankful for the rain we have had this week. It’s been way too many weeks since the last significant rain.

One of my favorite things

What my husband does to a frozen pizza to make it a tasty dinner for us.

I am creating

I wrote a piece about how God isn’t counting strikes against us – Grace Beyond Failure.

I continue to doodle:

I am listening to

My husband and I are listening to scripture together, just 4 chapters a day. We started in Genesis. It’s a great way to absorb God’s Word.

I am reading

5 Puritan Women: Portraits of Faith and Love by Jenny-Lyn de Klerk
The Deconstruction of Christianity: What It Is … by Alisa Childers and Tim Barnett
Revelation: A Shorter Commentary by G.K. Beale
The Book of Hebrews

I am hoping

I am hoping to take something off my plate so that I have more time for reflection and hobbies.

In my kitchen

I made a couple of recipes this past month that were complete failures.
Just about ready to fix soup, cook some apples, and bake something with pumpkin in it.

In my garden

Thinking about doing some landscaping. I’d like to add some native perennials to my backyard.
Now, to hire a young man to dig holes!
I’ve started thinking about which varieties to choose.

Quote

We breathe in Scripture, and we breathe out prayer. Breathe in, breathe out: that’s the Christian life. Prayer is the breath of heavenly life: where that life is, there must be some prayer; where that life flourishes, there will be much prayer, and much pleasure in prayer. (Michael Reeves)

A moment from my day

I’m hoping to learn a new craft this month … embroidering greeting cards.
It might not be this particular pattern … we’ll see.

Closing Thought

Borrowing this prayer from Charles Whiston:

O Lord Jesus Christ:
In obedience to your holy claim upon me,
I give myself anew to you this day;
All that I am, all that I have,
To be wholly and unconditionally
yours for your using.
Take me away from myself,

And use me up As you will,
When you will, Where you will,
With whom you will. Amen.
