Connecting life, scripture, and poetry

Hoping, Thinking, Reflecting August Edition

Beth Ferguson, August 1, 2026August 2, 2026

Looking out my window

July was the month for field trips with the kids–
the science museum
the arcade
school supply shopping, ice cream and more!

I am thinking

Last month I mentioned imagination and spiritual formation – those thoughts continue. I’m also pondering what it means to bear the name of Christ in light of the third commandment. I love reading Carmen Joy Imes and her understanding of those important words.

I am thankful

This month, I’ve been especially thankful for family, for our sons, their wives, our grandsons.
It is such a privilege to live close and do life together.

One of my favorite things

Simple meals, little cooking. I love chicken salad.

I am creating

I wrote a piece this past month on why we never outgrow Scripture. I invite you to check it out!

I laso continue to doodle:

I am listening to

The Gospel Coalition Conference for Women in June 2026 (TGCW 26) is now all online for free.
I am listening to various breakout sessions and learning so much.

I am wearing

My new sneakers … love my HeyDudes

I am reading

So many books, so little time …
Authentic Ministry: Serving from the Heart by Michael Reeves,
Dust to Dust by Jen Wilkins, and
The Common Rule by Justin Earley.

I am hoping

August brings so much excitement –
Back to School
New Church Year
the Hint of Fall
I am hoping to grow in this season, learning dependence on God.

In my kitchen

It’s been quiet in my kitchen.
Simple sandwiches
Air Fryer quickies
The Outdoor Griddle stealing the show

In my garden

It’s so hot out there –
Not much happening.

Quote

If you live and grow in your knowledge about God but do not grow in your delight in God, you are only hardening in sin and hypocrisy.

A moment from my day

Our church sponsored a night at the ballgame on the last night of July.
More than 100 of us sat together in the stadium, cheering
the Round Rock Express, a triple-A minor league.
The finale was fireworks and they were lovely and inspiring!

Closing Thought

Solitude whispers truth and melts hardness;
it invites us to listen — not just to ourselves,
but to the gentle voice of God.
Today, I give thanks for solitude —
the quiet friend who calls me back home to the heart,
to rest, to creation, and to God.
