Connecting life, scripture, and poetry

Hold on to hope!

Beth Ferguson, December 2, 2016November 12, 2020

candle-542464Advent is the season for waiting and watching … but not just for the baby, but also for the King who will return!! Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23

Jeremiah 33:14-16:  “‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the gracious promise I made to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.   “‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land.  In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety.  This is the name by which it will be called:  The Lord Our Righteousness.’”

Luke 21:25-28  “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.  Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.  At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.  When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

The Porter watches at the gate,
The servants watch within;
The watch is long betimes and late,
The prize is slow to win.
‘Watchman, what of the night?’ But stillhope
His answer sounds the same:
‘No daybreak tops the utmost hill,
Nor pale our lamps of flame.’

One to another hear them speak
The patient virgins wise:
‘Surely He is not far to seek’ –
‘All night we watch and rise.’
‘The days are evil looking back,
The coming days are dim;
Yet count we not His promise slack,
But watch and wait for Him.’

Let the candle of hope burn brightly today!.  Let’s stand, lift up our heads, and sing out loud the words of Job … “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. … I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another.  How my heart yearns within me!  (Job 19:25, 27)
